An analysis of retail companies in Indian apparel sector

Abstract

Indian retail is one of the pillars of the Indian economy and accounts for 25% of its GDP, which is amongst the highest in the world1. Overall Indian retail market is estimated to be 630 billion US dollars, of which modern retail is estimated to be 9–10%, i.e 60 billion US dollars2 and is one of the top five retail markets in the world.3 Over the last decade, there is so much growth in Indian retail which leads a shift towards organized retail. In Indian retail market, the clothing and fashion retailing is at the second position with share of just under 10%4. It accounts for approximately 1/3 of the organized retail market. The main focus of the paper is on the top retail companies dealing in private label brands (as per market capitalization) in the Indian apparel sector-Trent, Shoppers Stop, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited, Future Retail and Future Enterprises Limited. The paper represents the market capitalization, sales, profits etc. of these companies over the years. Data is collected from secondary sources like annual reports of these retail companies, prowess database, money control web sites and through various other web sites.
