Perception of Technical Training Programme among Engineering Graduates

Employability skills are very essential in the current global job market. These skills can be termed as technical skills, which are given utmost importance in campus interview. At college level education, it will be a productive venture to incorporate these skills in the syllabus. This will certainly help students develop their employability skills and it will make them execute the assigned works efficiently in any institution after the selection process. Apart from theoretical aspects, colleges are concentrating on various training programmes to develop the skills of engineering graduates to get placement. This paper tries to study the perceptions of technical training programme among the engineering students to get employed in reputed companies. A sample of 100 final year engineering graduates who have undergone technical training constituted the sample of the present research. The study was conducted among final year engineering students in a private engineering college in the north zone of Tamil Nadu. The data were collected through structured questionnaire. The data was analysed in SPSS and the results are presented. The result reveals that Theoretical knowledge, soft skills and positive attitude are more possessed by the engineering graduates. There is no significant difference between gender and locality with regard to perceptions about technical training programme. The result shows that EEE students are having more mean score when compared to Mechanical, CSE and ECE students. Factor Analysis result reveals that, the perception about technical training programme is extracted into five factors, namely, Organizing Skills, Lack of Knowledge, Leadership Skills, Competency Gap and Problem Solving. The challenge for the engineering institutes in the country today has been to churn out employable engineering graduates as per the need of the industry. While a lot has been done in this direction still the gap in between the engineers churned out by the institutes and the expectations of the industry has been widening continuously. Therefore the engineering colleges have the responsibility to fill the gap by developing their engineering graduates through imparting quality technical training and get placement for their students.
