Assess the expressed lifestyle practices of obese and non-obese children in a selected community in gurgaon

Abstract

A descriptive design with descriptive survey approach was used to collect data from 55 children at selected community of Gurgaon, to assess the expressed life style practices of obese and non-obese children at the age group of 8 to 12 years and was selected by purposive sampling technique and data was collected by using structured questionnaire schedule. The collected data was analyzed and coded by using descriptive statistics. Findings show that 42% of children were at the age of 11–12 years, 65% of children were females, 93% children were followers of Hindu religion.45% children were in 6th standard, 67%children were from the nuclear family, 62% children were non-vegetarian. 47% mothers were graduate.100% parents were having <50, 000 monthly family income.71%of parents were non-obese. Area wise mean, SD & mean percentage of the life style practices of non-obese and obese children reveals that in non-obese the highest mean score (12.17±0.94) which was 81.13% obtained for the area ‘physical activities’. Further lowest mean score (6.3±1.23) which was 70% obtained from the area ‘sedentary behavior’ In the obese children highest mean score (4.82± 1.18) which was 80.33% obtained from the area ‘family’ and lowest mean score (4.21±0.95) which was 70% was obtained for the area ‘sleep pattern The overall mean percentage of non-obese was 74.50% and obese children were 75.80%. It reveals that the mean percentage of non-obese children and obese were more or less similar.

The finding shows that 51%of children were obese and overweight and 49% of children were non-obese
