This paper tries to focus on the significance of English language learning strategies and position and place of English in India. To improve the English competency among English learners particularly for elementary and secondary students there is a need for instruction of strategies for teachers as well as students. With this point of view paper highlights the six categories of strategies of Oxford (2001) and its implications in the Indian contexts.
