Abstract

In India, the concept of labour welfare has gained much importance in the present era due to the dynamic change in socio economic conditions of the workers. India being a welfare state is bound by legal provision to protect the workers by providing adequate welfare facilities, wages, social security measures, and other voluntary services for physical, social and psychological well being of the employees. With the advent of industrialisation and globalisation, a large number of workforce in organised and unorganised sector are deprived of welfare measures and unaware of their labour rights. This paper attempts to provide an insight into the conceptual structure of labour welfare stating its importance, motives for providing labour welfare services to its workers, the various classification of labour welfare activities by different bodies, codes to be followed by the organisation for the successful implementation of the labour welfare programme, the theories involved in conceptualising the welfare concept and the legal provisions of labour welfare.
