This work deals with the reduction of surface roughness of the reciprocating parts of an internal combustion engine and its frictional loss and thereby improving its overall performance. Internal combustion engines are being used since the last hundred years to change heat energy to useful work. However the efficiency of engines does not exceed 50% in most cases. A major part of the power produced by the engine is lost in overcoming friction between the reciprocating parts. Also heat lost to the surroundings is major factor in reducing engine efficiency. Nanocoatings can be used to reduce surface roughness of the engine components and to act as a protective coating against wear of the components. The use of nanocoatings for engine application presents a suitable solution to this problem. Friction between the reciprocating parts is reduced and the power output is increased as the frictional power loss reduces. The overall efficiency of the engine is also improved.
