Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on First Aid Measures among D.Ed. Students

Abstract

Accidents are the most common cause of mortality in children and account for considerable childhood mortality. If the teachers are given information on first aid majority of the injuries can be prevented. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on selected first aid measures among Diploma in Education students of Mangalore city.

One group pre test post test design was used for the present study. The study was conducted in selected D.Ed. colleges in Mangalore city. The sample for the present study comprised of 60 randomly recruited D.Ed. students. The knowledge questionnaire consisted of 32 multiple choice items. A written permission was obtained from the concerned authority. On the 1st day the purposes of the study was explained and written consent was obtained from the study participants. The participants were assured about confidentiality of their responses. The planned teaching programme was given on the same day for a period of an hour using L.C.D. The post test was conducted on 14th day and by administering the same knowledge questionnaire.

With regard to the age most of the sample; 48(80%) were in the age group 17–19 yrs, 10 samples (16.66%) were within 20–22 yrs, and remaining 2(3.33%) were between 26–28 yrs. The posttest mean percentage knowledge scores in all content areas were higher than the pretest mean percentage knowledge scores. The maximum post test mean percentage score is in the area of insertion of foreign bodies (92.77%). Furthermore, there was no significant association between the knowledge and selected demographic variables.

Planned teaching programme has been effective method of increasing the knowledge of the D.Ed. students about first aid measures.
