To Assess the Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and the Effectiveness of Nurse Directed Education Programme on Prevention and Management of Iron and Calcium Deficiency among Women in a Selected Urban Area of Mysore

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is considered to be among the most important contributing factors to the global burden of disease. Iron deficiency is the most common single cause of anemia worldwide accounting for about half of all anemia cases. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Women between 30–40 years tend to be most at risk of calcium loss. Both lactation and menstruation cause a significant loss of calcium and iron.

The research approach and design adopted for the study was one group pre test post test design. 45 women between 30–40 years of age were selected by using non probability Purposive sampling technique in selected urban area of Mysore. Pilot study was conducted, the tool and study design were found to be feasible. The data was collected using personal profile, structured knowledge questionnaire. Bone mineral density was assessed by Dual energy x-ray Absorptiometry Scan. Nurse directed Education Programme was administered and health exhibition was organized. Post test was administered to assess the effectiveness of teaching programme.

BMD test revealed that 2.22% women between 30–35 years had osteopenia and 1.66% women between 36–40 years had osteoporosis. The results of the study revealed that there is a significance of difference between the mean pre test and mean post test knowledge scores (t=45.58) which was found to be highly significant at 0.05 level of significance. The result also shows that the knowledge scores of women had no significant association with their selected personal variables except for income and food habit.

Current research demonstrated that women have lack of knowledge regarding prevention and management of iron and calcium deficiency. Creating an awareness regarding these important minerals will help them to prevent chronic conditions related to iron and calcium deficiency.
