A Descriptive Study to Assess the Perception of Student Nurses Regarding the Role of Nurse in Clean and Healthy India

A descriptive study was conducted to assess the perception of student nurses regarding the role of nurse in clean and healthy India. Study was conducted among the nursing students of St Xavier's Catholic College of Nursing. Sample size calculation was done and among 360 students 186 study participants were selected by using simple random sampling technique. An open ended questionnaire was prepared with four demographic variables such as age of the student, sex of the students, course of study and year of study. Students expressed their view on role of nurse in clean and healthy India. Their views were analysed by using content analysis and their answers were categorised under five major roles. Firstly the role of nurse in clean and healthy India as an individual under that act as a role model, follow hygienic practices strictly and keep clean of own surroundings, secondly as a care giver in the hospital under that maintain biomedical waste management, educate the hospital cleaning staff next as an educator under that educate the public regarding the hazards of unclean environment, educate regarding the various modes of environmental pollution and educate regarding the recycling of paper and plastic waste, next as a citizen of India under that participate in the clean India campaign, conduct awareness programme on the clean India campaign and motivate the public to think positively about the clean India campaign and as a researcher under that conduct survey regarding cleanliness in hospitals, institutions and in local areas and bring out innovative ideas in waste management.
