A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Reminiscence Therapy on Psychological Well-being among Old Age People Residing in a Selected Old Age Home at Vadodara

Abstract

To assess the level of psychological well-being among the sample. To compare the mean pre test and mean post test scores on the level of psychological well-being among the sample. To find association on pre test score of the samples and their selected demographic variables.

General well-being (GWB) schedule was used to assess the level of psychological well-being and later same schedule to evaluate the level of psychological well-being of the 30 old age people to evaluate the effectiveness of Reminiscence Therapy. Non-probability purposive technique was used to draw the sample. The conceptual frame work for the study was developed based on Roy's adaptation theory.

The data collected from the respondents was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Pre-test assessment revealed that 60% of the subjects had severe distress and 40% of them had moderate distress. The total mean percentage of pre-test level of psychological well-being score was 56.66% with mean ± SD 62.63± 5.81605. Dimension wise distribution of psychological well-being score of old age people revealed that there was 61% in total mean percentage of psychological well-being score with mean ± SD is 67.1± 4.5208. The mean percentage effectiveness was 61%. The mean percentage of effectiveness was 61.06%in the area ‘Anxiety (ANX)’; 59.33% in the area ‘Depression mood(DEP); 65.55% in the area ‘Positive well-being(PWB)’; 78.44% in the area ‘Self-control (SC)’; 53.33% in the area ‘General health (GH)’ and 58.83% in the area ‘Vitality (VT)’. Dimension wise effectiveness of Reminiscence therapy was highest (78.44%) in the dimension ‘Self-control (SC)’. Further effectiveness of Reminiscence Therapy was tested by inferential statistics using paired‘t’ test. The difference between pre-test and post-test level of psychological well-being scores of old age people was found to be very highly significant.

The Reminiscence Therapy was found to be an effective strategy in increasing the level of psychological well-being of old age people.
