Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia among older people. It is the fourth leading cause of death in the developed countries and affects people in considerable numbers all over the world. There are about 30 million people suffering from Alzheimer's disease in the world with 4.6 new million cases of dementia added every year. Studies have revealed that awareness and knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease is low. Therefore a quasi-experimental study to assess the effect of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease among Adults in selected community, Ludhiana, Punjab was undertaken with the objectives: to assess pre-test & post-test knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease among adults in control and experimental group, to compare pre-test and post-test knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease among adults in control and experimental group & to find out the relationship of pre-test and post-test knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease among adults in control and experimental group with selected variables like Age, Gender, Educational Status, Marital Status, Type of Family, Monthly income and Occupation.
A Quasi-Experimental study was conducted in selected community, Ludhiana, Punjab. Target population was adults of age group 21–50 years. 60 adults were selected by purposive sampling. 30 Adults were kept in Experimental group & 30 in Control group. Data was collected by self-structured questionnaire on knowledge regarding Alzheimer's disease. Data was analysed by descriptive and inferential statistics and presented through tables and figures.
Findings revealed that majority of adults obtained below average pre test knowledge score in both control and experimental group. After imparting STP, knowledge of adults was increased i.e. 80% adults obtained excellent post test knowledge score with mean percentage of 87.37 in experimental group. The mean post test knowledge score of adults in experimental group regarding Alzheimer's disease was significantly higher than the post test knowledge score of adults in control group. Age, Education, Marital status & Monthly Income were found to be significantly related with increase in knowledge of adults regarding Alzheimer's disease.
