The Level of Knowledge of Nursing Students Regarding Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome in Selected Nursing College, Thrissur

Recently due to changes in life style many women may be affected with menstrual irregularities. Among that one of the common disorder that affect ovaries called poly cystic ovarian syndrome, It is more common in 20–30 years of age, since the description by Stein and Leventhal, the poly cystic ovarian syndrome keeps on unfolding day by day. It is seen that there are 36 million cases confirmed world wide, 35%of the Indian populations also is affected with this disease out of this 13.56% are Keralities.

The present study intended to determine the level of knowledge of nursing students regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome and to find association between the knowledge of nursing students regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome with selected demographic variables. A descriptive survey design was adopted to achieve the objectives of the study. The sample size is limited to 100 nursing students, between the age of 18-21yrs. Investigator adopted simple random sampling techniques to select the samples. The tools used for data collection were demographic data and structured knowledge questionnaire on PCOS.

The major findings reveals 14% of nursing students have adequate knowledge.81% have moderate knowledge and only 5% have inadequate knowledge related to poly cystic ovarian syndrome. It reveals that there is no association between knowledge and selected demographic variables of nursing students.

It was concluded that the knowledge assessment was effective in analyzing the knowledge among nursing students regarding polycystic ovarian syndrome. The cause of polycystic ovarian syndrome is not fully understood, but genetic may be a factor, polycystic ovarian syndrome seems to runs in families so the chance of having it is higher if other women in the family have it or have irregular periods or diabetes. Polycystic ovarian syndrome can be passed down from either the mother's side or father's side. Not all women with polycystic ovarian syndrome have polycystic ovary, nor do all women with ovarian cyst have polycystic ovarian syndrome.
