Assessment of Prevalence of Tuberculosis and Factors Related to the Compliance with the Management of Tuberculosis among Tuberculosis Patients Attending RNTCP Centres in Mysuru City

Abstract

Tuberculosis a highly feared disease, known for centuries to affect, debilitate, impoverish large sections of the populations and even killer, continues to ravage the world and especially the developing world. Poor adherence to treatment remains a major obstacle in the global fight against tuberculosis. Factors, such as the chronic nature of the disease, the socio-cultural context and poverty, and interacting with physicians, nurses, and other health care workers, all affect access to and adherence to the treatment of tuberculosis

Descriptive, exploratory survey design.

Convenience sampling technique was adopted to select 120 tuberculosis patients from 6 RNTCP centres in Mysuru city. Structured Interview Schedule was used to assess the selected personal variables and to explore the facilitating and hindering factors related to the compliance with the management of tuberculosis.

The study findings revealed that majority of tuberculosis patients (75%) were males and 57% were in age group of 15–34 yrs. 85.6% of tuberculosis patients agreed that tuberculosis medications made them to feel tired. 20% of patients expressed that they are not aware of the fact that tuberculosis can spread from one person to another. Majority of tuberculosis patients expressed job related problems, lack of family support, emotional factors and economic factors are affecting their compliance with tuberculosis treatment.

Study findings also revealed significant association between the hindering factors related to the compliance with the management of tuberculosis and the age, duration of treatment and category of treatment of tuberculosis patients at 0.05 level of significance.

Various disease related, knowledge related and socio economic factors were expressed by the tuberculosis patients as hindering and facilitating factors in their compliance with the management of tuberculosis.
