First aid is the initial care of the ill or injured. In India 4.7% of deaths are recorded due to accidents in the 5–15 age groups. Accidents occur in children by domestic injury, drowning, fall, road traffic accident & poisoning. The aims of first aid are to preserveand protect life, prevent further injury or deterioration of illness and help to promote recovery.
Objectives of the study were to assess the pre-test and post-test level of knowledge and attitude on first aid measures, to assess the effectiveness of STP.
A pre experimental study was conducted using one group pretest-posttest research design. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 60 school teachers working at rural government schools of Durg, Chhattisgarh. Data was collected using structured knowledge questionnaires and attitude likert scale during the month April 2013 before and after administering Structured Teaching Program (STP) on First Aid in selected conditions like Epistaxis, Foreign bodies in eye, ear, nose, Wound and injuries, Bites and stings and Epilepsy.
The result revealed that the mean knowledge score in pretestwas 21.17 (±5.02) and in post-test was 38.52 (±6.02). Mean attitude score obtained in pretest was 32.18 (± 6.04) and in post-test was 54.25 (±3.08). Majority of school teachers had average knowledge (70%). 48.3% had negative attitude and 51.7% had positive attitude in pre-test. After STP maximum number of school teachers (61.7%) had excellent knowledge and 93.3% had highly positive attitude. There was a significant association between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores (p=0.001)and attitude score (p=0.001). Significant association was found between knowledge and attitude after STP (p=0.01).
The study findings revealed that STP on selected conditions of first aid was effective in improving knowledge and attitude of school teachers.
