Abstract

Estimate the risk of for sub optimal glycemic control among diabetic patients with poor adherence to healthy diet.

The design adopted for the study was community based Case control design. The participants consisted of 353 patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus with at least one year of duration disease, who were on prescribed treatment for Diabetes. The survey was conducted in a rural, urban and coastal region of Thiruvananthapuram district. A Brief Dietary Assessment questionnaire designed for use in community setting was used to assess the dietary pattern.

The univariate analysis showed that compared to patients with good adherence partial adherent patients have 2.64(CI,1.60 – 4.37) times more chance of occurring poor glycdmic control and the risk increased to 4.42 (CI, 2.30 – 8.53) times as it moves from partial to poor adherence to healthy diet.

It is concluded that that the group with suboptimal glycemic control have partial or poor adherence to healthy diet. Dietary factors are a modifiable factor which could be intervened to achieve optimal glycmeic control.
