The present study was designed to assess the knowledge of the postnatal mothers on neonatal care and compare the knowledge on neonatal care among primi and multi postnatal mothers.
This descriptive survey was carried out in the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and Dr. T.M.A. Pai Hospital in Udupi District Karnataka, India during January – February 2013. Purposive sampling technique was used with an attempt to cover the postnatal mothers after both vaginal delivery and cesarean section delivery. The data was collected from 166 postnatal mothers by researcher using demographic proforma and structured knowledge questionnaire on neonatal care. The data was categorized and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. The SPSS 16.0 version was used for the analysis of the study. Majority of the postnatal mothers 130 (81.9%) had good knowledge and 36 (18.1%) had poor knowledge on neonatal care. There was a significant difference in the knowledge regarding neonatal care between primi and multi postnatal mothers (χ2= 3.880, p=0.049) at 0.05 level of significance. So, awareness and maternal education programs on newborn care should be provide to the mothers, family and community in order to improve knowledge of mothers and for them to adapt healthy practices for newborn care.
