Abstract

School health is an important branch of community health. The school years are a time of increasing risk for negative health related outcomes. In India dental caries is the commonest disease in school age, affecting 50–70% of children. A True-Experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on the knowledge regarding the dental hygiene among primary school children. The study was conducted in government schools of Narela Delhi. Totally 60 students those who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected by systematic random sampling technique. A pretest was taken by using self structured interview schedule. After 7 days posttest was taken. The result of the posttest score revealed that the structured teaching programme had its impact on improving the level of knowledge regarding dental hygiene among primary school children. The overall mean score of pretest in experimental group was 12.87 with the standard deviation 2.738 whereas in posttest overall mean posttest score in experimental group was 19.40 with the standard deviation 2.787. The ‘t'value was 10.715 which is statistically significant at p<0.05 level, and in control group the overall mean score of pretest was 12.40 with the standard deviation 3.136 whereas in posttest overall mean score was 13.00 with standard deviation 3.484. The ‘t’ value was 2.217. There was no significant association between the pretest level of knowledge and the selected socio-demographic variables in experimental group and in control group. Similar type of studies can be done to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice on dental hygiene among large size of samples in different settings.
