India has been designated as the “Global capital of Diabetes” having the highest 35 million diabetic patients. Worldwide 3.2 million deaths are attributed to diabetes every year and at least one in ten deaths among adults between 35 to 64 years old is attributed or diabetes. The feet are a major focus in diabetes. Neglect of the feet in diabetes is a leading cause of amputation. The mortality rate in patients with diabetic foot ulceration is also high and is approximately twice that of patients without ulceration. Worldwide, the prevalence of foot ulceration among patients with diabetes mellitus ranges from 1.3% to 4.8% in the community, to as high as 12% in hospital.
The main of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching program on knowledge and practice regarding foot care among diabetic clients in selected urban community of Panipat.
The research approach adopted for the present study is a quantitative approach. The research design selected for the present study was pre-experimental (one group pre-test post-test) design. The setting for the study was selected was urban community (N.F.L. Township) of Panipat. The sample size for the present study was 50 diabetic clients selected by non-purposive sampling technique.
Data was collected from samples to evaluate the effectiveness of video-assisted teaching program regarding foot care in terms of knowledge and practice by using socio-demographic profile; self-structured diabetic foot care questionnaire (r=0.68) and foot care checklist (r=0.75).
The mean pre-test knowledge and practice scores and standard deviation of the diabetic clients regarding foot care was 17.00 +/-1.906 and 3.68 +/-1.544 respectively, which increased in mean post-test-1 to 24.26 +/-0.694 for knowledge scores and 14.10 +/-0.931 for practice scores and for the mean post-test-2, it is 21.12 +/-2.397 and 10.20 +/-2.231 for knowledge and practice scores respectively.
From the above findings, it can be concluded that the video-assisted teaching program was effective in improving knowledge and practice skills of diabetic clients regarding foot care. Researcher further recommended that the same study can also be conducted among rural diabetic clients and comparison can be done on knowledge between urban and rural diabetic clients.
