Information on abortion is limited and inaccurate, especially in the developing world, which has led to speculation on the prevalence of abortion in these regions.
This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and attitude of mothers regarding safe abortion.
Sixty conveniently selected mothers from two hospitals in Tumkur district were provided with knowledge questionnaire and attitude scale. Half of the sample was in the age group of less than 25 years. Slightly more than 1/3 of the mothers were in the age group of 26–30 years.
Mean knowledge score of the mothers was found to be 17.28±2.44 which depicts poor awareness among the sample regarding safe abortion. Their attitude was inclined slightly positive towards safe abortion as the mean attitude score was 30.95±3.61. There was significant association between age and knowledge and attitude. Education and occupation was also found to be significantly associated with knowledge and attitude towards safe abortion.
