A Descriptive Study to Assess the Sleep Quality of Women with Gynaecological Cancers Admitted at GGSMH, Faridkot

Abstract

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by abnormal proliferation and uncontrolled growth of cells. Gynaecological cancers are those cancers which originated in the female reproductive system. Physical illness, pain, hospitalization, drugs and other treatments for cancer and the psychological impact of a malignant disease may disrupt the sleeping patterns of persons with cancer. People affected by oncology problems are particularly subject to sleep disorder experiences when they have to be hospitalized for treatment.

The present study aimed to assess the sleep quality of women with gynecological cancers admitted in gynaecological ward at GGSMH, Faridkot.

Convenience sampling technique was used to select 60 sample. Socio-Demographic Data of the patient was collected by interview schedule. Numeric Pain Rating Scale was used to assess pain level and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index tool was used to assess the sleep quality. The data was analysed by using descriptive(mean, percentage) and inferential (chi-square) statistics.

The findings revealed that 78.3% of women experienced good sleep quality while 75% experienced bad sleep quality while they were hospitalized. Main factors that affected sleep quality during hospitalization and found to be statistically significant at p≤0.05 includes Chemotherapy, Loneliness and Nursing Procedures.

Most of the study subjects experienced bad sleep quality during hospitalization. Main factors responsible for bad sleep quality during hospitalization are Chemotherapy, Loneliness and Nursing Procedures.
