Worm infections are one of the major health problems confronting millions of preschool children. World Health Organization in 2005 estimates that infection with round worm, whipworm and hookworms were approximately 250 million, 46 million and 151 million. Parasites cause malnutrition and retarding physical development The major problem of the rural community is lack of environmental sanitation and poor hygiene mainly due to lack of knowledge among mothers which predisposes their preschool children to the worm infestation.
to assess the awareness of worm infestation among mothers and its prevalence in their Preschool children in a selected rural community of district Ludhiana. A Descriptive design was used.100 mothers and their Preschool Children were selected with convenience sampling technique. Data was collected with the help of structured questionnaire and microscopic stool examination.
The study results showed that 55% mothers of preschool children had average knowledge regarding worm infestation followed by 24% had good and 21% mothers had poor knowledge. 14% preschool children were infected with worm infestation. Finding suggest significant relationship of education of mother and father with awareness of mother and total number of family members with prevalence.
The study concluded that 24% mothers had good knowledge regarding worm infestation and prevalence of worm infestation was 14% among their children.
