Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is really a chronic metabolic disorder where prevalence has been increasing steadily across the world. As a result of the trend, it is fast becoming an epidemic in certain countries of the world with the amount of people affected expected to double within the next decade due to raise in ageing population, thereby adding to this already existing burden with regard to healthcare providers, especially in poorly formulated countries.
Diabetic foot is viewed as a common complication associated with diabetes. Approximately, 15% of people having diabetes develop foot ulcer. People with diabetic foot ulcer have higher chance of lower limb amputations, which is a complicated problem. Diabetic foot is also a significant cause of hospitalization with the diabetic patient. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluations would be the key factors during treatments process of foot ulcers for those who have diabetes. A multidisciplinary health team is needed for the treatment as well as the prevention of diabetic foot.
Diabetes nurses play their educating role in the field of prevention of diabetic foot, foot care and stopping from foot injury. In care dimension, nurses responsible for earlier detection of modifications in skin and foot sensation, foot care, dressing and apply new technology. In the area associated with rehabilitation, help patient sufferings through diabetic foot ulcer even amputation, to have movement tend to be diabetes nurse's duties.
