Disposables vs Reusables: Are we Missing the Wood for the Trees?

In the operating room asepsis often refers to those practices used to promote or induce a microorganism free environment. An important element of this procedure in an operation theatre is the use of drapes and gowns. These could be for multiple uses (reusable) or for single use (disposable). Within these two categories, there is considerable variation in design and performance characteristics and choice between them has been a matter of debate for decades. In addition to parameters like liquid penetration, contamination, comfort, issues like cost, environmental impact, job creation and carbon credits have been brought into the debate. Are we missing the wood for the trees?
