Cardiac catheterization is an invasive diagnostic procedure used widely in the field of heart medicine in which radio-opaque arterial and venous catheters are introduced into selected blood vessels of the right and left sides of the heart. Most commonly, the catheters are inserted percutaneously through the blood vessels, or via a cut down procedure. Pressures and oxygen saturations in the four heart chambers are measuredand determine the extent of atherosclerosis based on the percentage of coronary artery obstruction. The study conducted to find out the effectiveness of orientation cum demonstration programme on knowledge regarding perioperative nursing care in angioplasty among nursing students.
The evaluator approach with one group pre-test and post-test design was used for the study. The sample consist 170 nursing students as selected by probability randomized sampling method. Data collected by administering structure knowledge questionnaire by the investigator. After collection of the base line data orientation cum demonstration programme was given to subject. 7th day post-test was conducted using the same questionnaire use for collecting the base line data. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive inferential statistics ('t ’test).
The collected data was tabulated and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Variables of age (X2= 5.282), gender (X2=1.56), Religion (X2=2.34) place of residence(X2 =10.38), type of family (X2= 17.18), family monthly income(X2=18.4), course of the study(X2= 32.22), previous knowledge(X2=0.00), source of information(X2=3.98). The knowledge level consist of overall mean score among nursing students. The mean percentage of 48.4% was obtain in pre-test with mean and SD of 22.3 ±2.0 and mean percentage of 77.8 was obtain in post-test with mean and SD of 35.8 ± 4.6. The't ’test value was 31.93*(significant at 5% level)
Findings of the study shows that the knowledge of subject was not satisfactory before the orientation cum demonstration programme. The orientation cum demonstration programme helps them to learn about perioperative nursing care of angioplasty. The post-test knowledge score showed significant increase in the knowledge of nursing students. Hence the orientation cum demonstration programme was in effective in teaching strategy or providing information and to improve the knowledge of nursing students.
Educating the nursing students and making them involve in caring for angioplasty patient could help in compliance with medication. It may also helpful to know about complications and definitely this kind of programme enhance the knowledge of nursing students for caring of angioplasty.
