Abstract

Disasters threaten the lives, the rights and the needs of millions of children around the world. They are more vulnerable because of their unique physiological, psychological and developmental attributes

Evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge and attitude regarding disaster management among school children.

Quantitative approach was used and the study design was quasi experimental pre test post test control group design. The main study was conducted in January 2016. Out of 60 samples, 30 were selected for control group 30 for the experimental group using non probability convenient sampling technique. The data were analyzed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics.

The mean post test knowledge score (23.27) of experimental group was significantly greater than control group (11.80) (t =15.331, p = 0.0001). The mean post test attitude score (24.13) of experimental group was significantly greater than mean post test attitude(17.97) of control group(t =12.196, p= 0.0001). Hence it is evident that planned teaching programme was effective in improving the knowledge and attitude regarding disaster management. The study revealed that there was no significant association between pre test knowledge score and demographic variables except the previous knowledge regarding disaster management (p=.001). None of the demographic variables had no association with attitude. There is a positive correlation with knowledge and attitude (r = 0.445, p = 0.0001)

The planned teaching programme improved the knowledge and attitude of school children regarding disaster management.
