Abstract

Mechanical ventilation is needed for the patients, who cannot maintain their normal breathing pattern and it is an increased risk for VAP. Semi-recumbent position (30º to 45º) is essential to prevent aspirationamong the patients, who require mechanical ventilation.

The randomized clinical trial (RCT)design and random sampling was adopted. Data was collected in medical and surgical adult intensive care units at KMCH in South India. Sample size was 80 patients; 40 in intervention and 40 in control group. Data collected included background variables, clinical profile, and Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS). The data was analyzed with the independent't ’test.

The obtained ‘t ’value is 4.99. There was a statistically significant (p=.01) reduction in the incidence of VAP among patients in intervention group.

Our study concluded that the semi-recumbent position is effective in reducing the occurrence of VAP among intubated patients than control group.
