In India while 77% of pregnant women receive some form of antenatal checkup, only 41% deliver in institutions. In response to the slow and varied progress in improvement of maternal and neonatal health, the Government of India launched Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram on June 1st 2011.
A Descriptive survey design was used to assess the knowledge of antenatal mothers regarding Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram(JSSK). Study was conducted among the antenatal mothers who are in the age group of below 36yrs,from selected rural areas of Guntur District. Sample for this study was 50 antenatal mothers from Nutakki area and 50 antenatal mothers from Peddaparimi area, comprising a total sample size of 100; and participants are selected by Simple random sampling technique. Structured questinnarie is prepared with two sections i.e., Part-A consisting of questions on demographic variables and Part –B consisting the knowledge items on JSSK. Antenatal mothers answered questinnarie on JSSK. Their responses are tabulated, organized, analysed and interpreted by using descriptive and inferential statistics based on objectives of the study.
The results shows that only 7% of antenatal mothers have adequate knowledge, 29% of antenatal mothers have moderate knowledge and 64% of antenatal mothers have inadequate knowledge about JSSK. There is a significant asssociation between the knowledge and distance from refferal units.
Based on the study results it is concluded that awareness programmes on JSSK are required in rural areas to impart the knowledge to the rural antenatal mothers.
