IV therapy presents a potential risk to patient safety, with associated risks varying from minor complications to death. The number of patients who require IV therapy is increasing, because more patients are acutely ill and also because of changes in prescribing patterns. To reduce risks associated with peripheral IV therapy, the risks need to be identified and managed.
An institutional based descriptive survey research design was conducted among inpatients of Referral hospital, Hawassa, Ethiopia. Data was collected by using a structured questionnaire, containing patient characteristics, predictors of PIVC complications, Visual Inspection Phlebitis Scale and Infiltration Scale and questions on nursing factors.
It is estimated that, approximately 60% hospital inpatients under peripheral IV cannulation in order to receive therapeutic medications. PIVC complications will contribute burden to the patients and health care organization. Surveys have shown that, many health care professionals who were managing the patient PIVC's frequently have lack of experience and may have received little or no specific training on the subject.
