A study to assess the knowledge regarding complication of mastectomy among patient undergoing mastectomy was selected in Yenepoya medical college hospital, Mangalore. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the desired size of patients. Totally 20 patients undergoing mastectomy was selected for collecting data. The knowledge regarding the prevention of complication of mastectomy was assessed through structured questionnaire. The result of the study showed that among 20 samples, 12(60%) had inadequate knowledge questionnaire about complications of mastectomy, 7(35%) had moderate knowledge and only 1(5%) had adequate knowledge questionnaire about complications of mastectomy. Majority 12 (60%) were aged above 51 years 12 (60%) were Hindus, 19 (95%) were married, majority 19 (95%) had only primary education, 17(85%) were house wives, 18(90%) had family income of Rs 10, 000/-to Rs 20, 000/-, 14(70%) belongs to joint family, 12(60%) were planned for radical mastectomy, 10(50%) had history of breast cancer among second degree relatives, maximum were 16(80%) consuming mixed diet like both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diet.
There was significant association found between knowledge with selected demographic variables such as age, religion, marital status, education, occupation, and family income, type of family, type of surgery, family history of breast cancer and dietary pattern except family income and type of family regarding the complication of mastectomy. So, the formulated H1 was accepted.
