Awareness and attitudes of staff nurses on evidence based nursing practices in the selected nri general hospital, Chinnakakani, Guntur (DT) Ap

Over the past decade in accordance with most health related professions, there has been a growing focus on quality improvement including moving from a traditional institution based paradigm to EBNP. Incorporating evidence in the daily working pattern is a challenge within the profession of nursing. Therefore the objective of this study was to assess the awareness and attitudes of staff nurses towards EBNP in patient care.

The research approach adopted was a quantitative and descriptive study design. The study was carried out among the staff nurses working in NRIAS of General and Multi Specialty hospital, Guntur district, AP. A total of 100 samples of staff nurses from various wards were selected by convenient sampling technique. Data were gathered using a three section questionnaire for a period of 3 months. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

The data collected from 100 staff nurses, majority (86%) of the samples were in the age group of 20–30 years. Vast majority (91%) of them were females. The findings also had revealed that (91%) of the subjects did not undergo any training regarding EBNP. With respect to the awareness of the subjects on EBNP the obtained mean score was 5.52±1.64 for a maximum score of 20. Surprisingly all (100%) of the samples were having poor knowledge. When it comes to the attitudes the obtained mean score was 56.7±8.94 for a maximum score of 100. While most (76%) of the subjects were having favorable attitudes towards EBNP.

Respondents established that the use of EBNP was essential in patient care and they had favorable attitudes towards EBNP. Despite their low level of knowledge they declared that they need to increase the use of evidence in their daily practice.
