Abstract

Hypertension is a large public health problem which leads to millions of deaths a year. It is an important cardiovascular risk factor. It is often called the “silent killer” because blood pressure-related complications often do not show up until they are life-threatening. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Reiki therapy on blood pressure of hypertensive patients.

Two groups repeated time series design was selected for the study.

40 hypertensive patients from selected Hospital, bangalore Karnataka by using purposive sampling technique. BP measured through mercury sphygmomanometer.

Pre test was conducted with structured questionnaire and BP measurement and Reiki therapy was given individually for 20–30 minutes, in a day early morning and evening in two groups for 14 consecutive days and on the 7th and 14th day post test was conducted.

The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The level of significance was set at 0.05 levels.

Observed values showed, there was a difference between the pre and post test level of blood pressure among hypertensive patients after Reiki therapy. Thus, the hypothesis was accepted for experimental group. No change was observed in control group.

The study findings indicate that Reiki therapy was effective to reduce the Blood pressure among hypertensive patients.
