Integrated Multidisciplinary Approaches to Sepsis Management: Advancing Medical – Surgical Nursing Practice

Sepsis, a critical and life-threatening syndrome, arises from a dysregulated host immune response to infection, leading to organ dysfunction and high mortality. Timely recognition and evidence-based interventions are vital for improving outcomes. This article synthesizes current medical–surgical strategies—emphasizing rapid detection, aggressive fluid resuscitation, optimized antimicrobial therapy, hemodynamic stabilization, source control, and vigilant nursing surveillance—in line with Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines. It also highlights the collaborative contributions of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and dietitians. Persistent challenges such as antimicrobial resistance, diagnostic delays, and resource constraints are discussed, alongside future directions including novel biomarkers, individualized care pathways, AI-powered early-warning systems, and strengthened stewardship programs. Enhanced nursing protocols and interprofessional synergy remain key to reducing sepsis-related morbidity and mortality.
