Abstract

Aretrospective study was conducted on a group of ten patients with end stage renal disease, on Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialyses (CAPD) who presented with sudden onset breathlessness and pleural effusion following CAPD and were suspected to have a pleuroperitoneal communication. The age of the patients ranged between 40 to 70 years. The interval between onset of hydrothorax and CAPD ranged from 2 weeks to 2 years. Radionuclide peritoneography was performed in all these patients. Four scans demonstrated a peritoneal-pleural communication with all these scans demonstrating a leak on the right side of the diaphragm. None of the patient demonstrated any adverse effect to the procedure. It was thus concluded that Radionuclide peritoneography is an effective technique in the evaluation and assessment of pleuroperitoneal communication in CAPD patients.
