Abstract

Jawaharlal Nehru cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Bhopal is a 100 bedded hospital and is the only center in the state of Madhya Pradesh having a full fledged Nuclear Medicine department and also giving low and high dose radio iodine therapy to patients. The present study was done to find the efficacy of radio iodine high dose therapy in Ca Thyroid patients. I-131 therapy was started in the department since February 2004.

15 Patients (12 female & 3 male) were included in study with papillary and follicular carcinoma thyroid. All patients had undergone total thyroidectomy WBS was done using 3–5 mci of I-131 dose orally. WBS was performed 48hrs later using medium energy parallel hole collimeter on e-soft platform having speed of 5–8 cm/min. Scans were taken in anterior & posterior projections I-131 high dose therapy ranging from 25mci-150mci (depending on the residual disease) was administered in our isolation ward.

Follow up scans post therapy after withdrawing Tab Eltroxin for six weeks revealed total ablation of the residual/remnant thyroid tissue. Treatment was successful in all 15patients (100%). On follow up the patients are put on Tab. eItroxin and are on regular follow up.
