Sports injuries are common occurrence in individuals who participate in sports and exercise related activities. In majority of sports related injuries such as stress fracture, periosteitits, acute stress reaction of bone, radiological investigations are normal in early stage. These injuries if not detected and treated in early phase, will lead to serious implications for a sportsman in long run. We have studied 30 patients of sports related injuries referred from premier sport institute of national repute. Radionuclide imaging revealed stress fractures in 23 cases, B/L shin splints in cases and avulsion fracture in one. In all cases X ray reports were normal. Study highlights the importance of radionuclide imaging in the diagnosis of sports related injuries in spite of availability of advanced CT and MRI technology. Bone scintigraphy is one of the most sensitive modality to pick up the sports related injuries in early stage and is being used extensively by sports medicine physicians.
