To evaluate the role of PET-CT in detecting the primary in patients presenting with metastases from unknown primary.
40 patients (29 males & 11 females) referred for PET-CT with metastatic lymphadenopathy (18)or extra nodal metastases (22-liver, brain, skeleta etc) were analysed retrospectively. Whole body FDG PET-(CE)CT was performed in all patients on Biograph 16 PET-CT scanner.
PET-CT detected primary site in 16 patients (40%). in 24 (60%) tumor site remained occult.
PET alone revealed primary site accurately in 12 (30%) patients where as PET-CT could identify the primary site more precisely in 4 more.
PET-CT as a comprehensive modality was able to detect primary site in the patients presenting with metastases from primary unknown. Thus guiding the clinician for appropriate management.
