Abstract

Sixty three genotypes (45 F1s and 18 parents) were raised in a randomized block design with three replications under eight environments i.e. four locations over two seasons, to work out stability parameters for days to maturity and seed yield per plant. The variances due to genotype and genotype x environment interaction were found significant for both the characters under study, suggesting differential response of genotypes in different environments. Most of the variation could be attributed to the differences between slopes of regression for both the characters. On the basis of mean environmental indices for four locations over summer and kharif seasons, Ujjain was found best environment for days to maturity and Meerut was best environment for seed yield per plant. The summer season 2003 was found better than kharif season for days to maturity and the kharif season 2003 was better for seed yield per plant. For days to maturity (earliness), nine genotypes (EC-206972 X MUM-2, PS-16 X Pant M-3, K-851 X Pant M-3, PDM-87 X Pant M-3, MH-8974 X ML-131, EC-206972, PS-16, ML-370 and MUM-2) and for seed yield per plant, fifty four genotypes showed non-significant regression coefficient (b) and deviation from regression (S2di), indicating complete absence of g x e interaction for these characters. Considering the stability parameters for an ideal genotype, hybrid EC-206978 X MUM-2 was found stable for seed yield per plant. The inheritance of stability is complex and the trend of inheritance was different for different characters and also different for different genotypes for the same character.
