A total of 18 accessions of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were subjected to random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis using polymerase chain reaction with nine arbitrary decamer oligonucleotide primers. Rice material studied includes three traditional basmati varieties (Ranbir basmati, Type-3 and Tarori basmati), six evolved basmati varieties (Pusa basmati-1, Haryana basmati-1, Pusa 1121, Super basmati, CSR 30 and Basmati-385), five strains of Kala Namak, a premium specialty scented rice of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Ramkajeera, a local strain of specialty rice, NDR 359 and Satthi varieties of coarse rice and a newly developed genotype of quality rice namely Vallabh basmati 21. A total of 61 different marker bands, were observed out of which 72.13% were polymorphic. The size range of the amplified DNAs was between 300 bp to 3500 bp. The RAPD data was analyzed to generate Jaccard's coefficients for RAPD bands and the experimental material was further classified following dendrogram analysis using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA). Results showed that Kala Namak collections expressed maximum diversity from evolved and traditional basmati varieties. The newly developed variety Vallabh basmati 21 expressed closeness with traditional varieties of basmati rices.
