The growing importance of the oat crop in Brazil poses a permanent challenge to breeding programs. Breeding for root related traits is one of the major challenges, since the evaluations for these traits are not trivial. Mutations affecting root traits can help to understand the underlying mechanisms that control root development and facilitate the breeding process. In this work, we report the generation of a mutant collection obtained from the gamma ray 60Co) treatment of cultlvar UFRGS 14. From 8,402 M2 plants analyzed, 609 genotypes expressing altered root morphology were selected (8.75%). An increase in seminal root number was obtained in average when compared to the parental cultlvar. An analysis of a subset of mutants with AFLP and ISSR markers was performed to evaluate the range of molecular changes observed in these mutants.
