Increased nitrogen uptake and protein profiles of Citrus limon seedlings due to organic manuring

Abstract

The organic manures namely FYM, leaf compost, verml-compost and neem cake were applied in the garden soli separately, in mixture by equal quantity and also in the mixture added with inorganic fertilizer for the growth of Citrus limon seedlings. Nitrogen uptakes of the seedlings were more in all the treatments over the control and an increasing trend of that was observed in higher doses of manures in the soli. By SDS PAGE analysis extra proteins subunit bands within the molecular weight range 17000–42000 Daltons were found in the manure treated plants. Highest nitrogen uptake of the plants was observed in the treatment of neem cake (20%) with garden soli. However in higher concentration of this manure in the soil the seedlings could not survive. Organic manure mixture when applied with the soli along with lower dose of inorganic fertilizer higher nitrogen uptake of the plants and maximum numbers of protein subunit bands with a unique band (17000–18000 Daltons) were observed. However, application of higher amount of inorganic fertilizer with that manure mixture was found deleterious for the seedlings.
