A set of forty two germplasm was screened to identify the extent of genetic diversity present at the molecular level using RAPD markers. Twenty primers amplified on an average of 4.8 bands per primer of which 3.2 bands per primer were polymorphic. Dendogram constructed based on molecular polymorphism revealed considerable amount of diversity among the varieties. Genotype specific DNA bands identified will have the potential to be employed as genetic finger prints for future varietal identification and classification. The study indicated that the RAPD markers provide an easy, rapid and simple technique for the preliminary assessment of genetic diversity among the accessions and local varieties.
