The study was undertaken to compare the anesthetic efficacy of 4% articaine with epinephrine (1:1,00,000) versus 2% lidocaine with epinephrine (1:1,00,000) during exodontia.
Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria 100 individuals participated in this single centre, randomized, controlled, cross over study design. During one appointment they received 4% Articaine with 1:100000 epinephrine and in the next they received Lidocaine with 1:100000 epinephrine.
The mean difference in the onset of subjective symptoms, onset of objective symptoms, onset of pulpal anesthesia and duration for 4% articaine and 2% lidocaine was 0.805 minutes, 0.390 minutes, 0.18023 minutes and 1.19760 hour respectively, this was a statistically significant. The difference in the pain on deposition of local anesthetic for 4% articaine and 2% lidocaine was found to be statistically significant.The mean difference in the depth of anesthesia was 1.45 on VAS scale and this was a statistically as well as clinically significant.
4% articaine has a greater anesthetic efficacy as compared to 2% lidocaine during minor oral surgical procedures. Further research with larger samples are required to demonstrate a statistically significant difference between both the local anesthetics.
