Effect of beverages on wear resistance of composite resin after simulated tooth brushing.

Abstract

In recent years due to esthetic demand, the advantage of minimal invasive preparation and the ability to strengthen the restored teeth, composite resin has gained popularity as a restorative material. In the oral environment besides the routine wear and tear, intake of certain beverages like coca cola, tea and fruit juices may also affect the physical properties of composite resins. In the present study the aim was to evaluate the in vitro effect of various beverages like coca cola, tea and orange juice on wear resistance of nanofilled direct composite and indirect composite sample after simulated tooth brushing for one year. For measuring the wear resistance all the samples were preweight by digital analytical balance then submitted under the mechanical tooth brushing machine for one hour. After wear test all the samples were weighed again and wear resistance was tabulated as a percentage of weight loss from the sample and was analyzed using one way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's multi comparison test (p < 0.05). From the observed result of the study it was concluded that there were no significant effect of immersion medium on weight loss of direct nanofilled composite and indirectly processed composite restorative materials.
