Prosthodontic management of xerostomic patients

Xerostomia is a clinical condition caused by decrease in the production of saliva. It is a local symptom, as part of a systemic disease, as side effects of medications or following therapeutic radiations to the head and neck regions. Xerostomia can lead to difficulties during management in patients receiving prosthodontic treatment. Dental practitioners should be aware of the signs and symptoms of xerostomia, available diagnostic procedures, likely etiologies, expected sequelae, and appropriate therapeutic regimens. Effective evaluation and appropriate treatment will promote acceptable levels of comfort and function. This article highlights the specific prosthodontic considerations for patients with xerostomia.
