Natural plant products have been used throughout human history for various purposes. Turmeric is known for many years for its use in treating several conditions. It is being used in Indian kitchens as a coloring and flavoring agent. The polyphenol curcumin is the active ingredient in the herbal remedy and dietary spice turmeric. A literature review was done from the world wide web and pubmed/medline for extracting information for the review article. The use of turmeric in medicine, active ingredients, mechanism of action, clinical uses related to dentistry and possible side effects are briefly reviewed in this article.
