Abstract

The postnatal period is the period which begins immediately after the birth of a child and extending for about six weeks. Postnatal period is also called postpartum period or puerperal period. After the birth of baby women is called postnatal mother. Episiotomy is relatively small in size, but causes considerable discomfort because the perineum is an extremely tender area.

Sitz bath relieves discomfort as well as significantly promotes wound healing, also reduces surface contaminants which contribute in wound healing process.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of medicated versus non medicated sitz bath in episiotomy healing among postnatal mothers of selected areas of Mohali, Punjab.

A quantitative approach with time series post test design only was adopted. By Purposive sampling technique 60 postnatal mothers were selected. Data was collected by REEDA scale. Analysis of data was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Study findings show that on day 5 in experimental group I, 23(76.6%) women were having better level of episiotomy healing and 7(23.3%) women were having delayed level of episiotomy healing. In experimental group II on day 5, 22(73.3%) women were having delayed level of episiotomy healing and 8(13.3%) were having better level of episiotomy healing.

This study concluded that medicated sitz bath helps in early healing of episiotomy wound than non medicated sitz bath.
