Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of peppermint water on prevention of nipple injury among postnatal mothers who delivered by caesarean birth. Randomized control trial was conducted among 80 postnatal mothers with 40 each in study and control group. Soaked cotton with peppermint water was applied for twenty minutes on breasts, twice a day for five days. Pretest on first postnatal day and posttest on third and fifth day was assessed with VAS, Storr Nipple soreness scale and Champion Nipple Trauma Scores. Mothers in study and control group did not experience severe nipple pain or crack within the study period. Nipple pain and soreness significantly reduced among study group (p<0.001). Nipple trauma reduced in study group in contrast to increase in control group (p<0.05). Peppermint water application was effective in prevention of nipple injury as mothers experienced less nipple pain, soreness and trauma.
