The aim of present study is to assess the refractive error among the students of age group 9 to 16 years with the help of Snellen's E-chart.
The study was conducted in selected schools of District Solan, (H.P.). The design of study is cross-sectional. Total of 2281 subjects were enrolled comprising 1339 boys and 942 girls within age group 9–16 years. An extensive literature review was done to develop guidelines for refractive errors and their distribution pattern among children.
Total of 2281 subjects were studied comprising 58.7% males and 41.3% females aged 9–16 years(6th to 10th standard) drawn from different Government and Private schools of Solan. Subjects were drawn from urban and rural area respectively and screened by using Snellen's E Chart. Overall incidence of refractory errors was found 8.5% which comprised of 10%females and 7.4%males. Our study showed higher number of cases of refractory errors in females compared to boys. Statistically significant association was found between result of eye examination and age, gender and family history, while relationship with locality and nature of school with the result of eye examination was found insignificant.
