Effectiveness of Self Instructional Module on Knowledge Regarding Airway Management Modalities among Staff Nurses in Selected Hospitals at Mangalore

The objectives of the study were to:

Assess the pre-test knowledge score of staff nurses regarding airway management modalities.

Assess the post-test knowledge score of staff nurses regarding airway management modalities.

evaluate the effectiveness of self instructional module on knowledge regarding airway management modalities.

Find out the association between the pre test knowledge score and selected demographic variables.

A pre-experimental one group pre-test post test design with evaluative approach was adopted in this study. The study was carried out in selected hospitals at Mangalore. The sample consisted of 60 staff nurses. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample for the study. Data collection was done by using structured knowledge questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

The majority of the staff nurses (83.33%) belonged to age group 21–30 years, most of the staff nurses (41.67%) had completed GNM and BSc [N], majority of staff nurses (75%) had 0–5 years of experience, most of the staff nurses (33.33%) were working in general ward and majority of the staff nurses (58.33%) did not participate in any in-service education regarding airway management modalities.

The mean percentage of knowledge scores of the staff nurses was 43.6% in pre-test and it was increased to 81.33% during the post test.

There was significant difference between the pre-test and post-test knowledge scores, which shows that the SIM was effective (t₅₉ =17.34, table value t₅₉ =1.96, p<0.05).

There was no significant association between pre-test knowledge scores and selected demographic variables.

The findings of the study showed that the SIM was effective in all the areas in improving and enhancing the knowledge of staff nurses.
