Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the production of numerous auto antibodies that form immune complexes which causes simultaneous organ damage. It occurs predominantly in women of childbearing age. SLE increases the risk of spontaneous abortion, intrauterine fetal death, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation, and preterm birth. Thus, Women with SLE are often counselled against the use of effective contraceptive methods. Hence this article will briefly review the major issues in pregnancies complicated by SLE and the management of SLE in pregnancy.
